U.S. President Barack Obama Official photographic portrait

“Congress has been trying since February to do something about this. It has not yet been able to get it done. It is the belief of this administration that… we can’t wait. I still urge Congress to move forward and build on this executive order,” said U.S. President Barack Obama.

Obama took initial initiative to take actions to assist in the reduction of prescription-drug shortages. He signed an executive order giving instructions to the FDA or the Food and Drug Administrations to take necessary actions in assisting reduction of life-saving medicine shortage. According to FDA reports, there have been more than 200 prescription-drug shortages this year alone, more particularly shortages on cancer drugs and anesthetics.

However, the signed executive order does not give the FDA new authority, but it increases magnitude of the agency’s existing authority by requiring drug manufacturers to submit information that is essential to eventual case of drug shortages. FDA is planning to add more staff to monitor the new responsibility.
